It’s finally happened: My new book, Super Gut: The Four-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight is now available!
If you are wondering why you can’t get off prescriptions medications for high blood pressure or cholesterol, why you can’t stop bowel urgency and discomfort, or why you remain depressed despite taking antidepressant medication, the answer can likely be found in your intestinal microbiome.
I would like Super Gut to do for the microbiome what Wheat Belly did for nutrition and open everyone’s eyes to what is going on in our gastrointestinal tracts. It’s no exaggeration to say that the disruption of the modern microbiome has reached disaster proportions. Just as we have altered the Earth’s environment by acidifying the oceans, melting polar ice caps, triggered violent weather, etc., so we have also introduced massive disruption of the internal ecosystem, our intestinal microbiome. While you and I as individuals have only limited power to improve the external environment, we have enormous power to re-establish order in our internal environment.
In Super Gut, you will learn that:
- We have lost microbes important to human health–Species that, when restored, yield spectacular health effects. Many of you are already familiar with one very important microbe, Lactobacillus reuteri, that I have been talking about for the last several years. L reuteri is very susceptible to common antibiotics such as ampicillin, as well as to other factors such as herbicides and pesticides in food, water, soil, and air, and it has thereby been lost by more than 90% of Americans. Restore this lost microbe and your brain is stimulated to release oxytocin, the hormone of love and affection. People report feeling closer to their partners, family, co-workers, and understanding the opinions of other people better.
People also experience an increase in dermal collagen that leads to reduced skin wrinkles, restoration of youthful muscle and strength, deeper sleep with extended periods of restorative REM, reduced appetite, and increased libido and erotic dreams, much as everyone had in your twenties. These are the effects experienced by restoring just one microbe. There are many others that you can replace with other effects.
Think of it like going to a restaurant and being handed a menu—do you freak out and say “There’s no way I can order all these appetizers, entrees, and desserts!” Of course you don’t. Instead, you choose the dishes you want. The same principle applies to restoring lost microbes: pick and choose the microbes for the effects you desire. If you want smoother skin, deeper sleep, and better relationships, choose L reuteri. If you want reduced arthritis pain, choose B. coagulans. If you want a healthier baby that sleeps through the night, has half as many bowel movements and thereby half as many diaper changes for mom and dad, less colic, and is healthier and smarter (higher IQ) as an older child, restore Bifidobacterium infantis. But we don’t just replace–we also ferment to very high bacterial counts, the “secret sauce” that yields spectacular health benefits.
- Because we’ve lost microbes important to health, unhealthy (mostly stool) microbes have proliferated to take their place, a process that I call “The fecalization of America,” or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, SIBO. Imagine a prison loses its guards: what will happen to the prisoners who now have free rein over the prison? Chaos, violence, murder—it would be horrific. The same sort of disruption has occurred in the modern intestinal microbiome with unhealthy species such as E coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella (species you may recognize as also causing food poisoning because the kid preparing your fast-food hamburger failed to wash his hands after moving his bowels) proliferating out of control, outmuscling healthy species (“guards”), then—incredibly—ascending up the 24 feet of ileum, jejunum, duodenum, and stomach, adding up to 30-feet of gastrointestinal tract (GI) filled with trillions of microbes.
These microbes don’t live for years, but for minutes to hours, turning over rapidly. Where does the debris generated by this rapid turnover of intestinal microbes go? Some of it gets into your bloodstream, a process called “endotoxemia,” validated for the first time in 2007 by a Belgian research group. This now tells us how microbes dwelling in the human GI tract can be experienced as rosacea or psoriasis in the skin, dementia or depression in the brain, joint and muscle pain of fibromyalgia or rheumatoid arthritis—all human illness needs to be re-defined in light of this finding. But you don’t have to wait for your doctor, whose education and training is typically 20-30 years out-of-date, and may even say stupid things like “There’s no such thing, or my favorite, “Did you consult Dr. Google?” You can take the reins of health yourself and eradicate these microbes, while also restoring the microbes you’ve lost.
With SIBO, you have choices. But our preliminary experience suggests that this situation is remediable by making a yogurt that contains microbial species that take up residence in the upper GI tract (where SIBO occurs) and choosing species that produce bacteriocins, natural antibiotics effective against the species of SIBO. I call this “SIBO Yogurt” and you will find the recipe in the Super Gut book.
Just as my Wheat Belly books yielded extraordinary turnarounds in health and weight by defying conventional dietary guidelines, so will Super Gut provide unconventional information that your doctor will bash, deride, and criticize, all while you enjoy smoother skin, faster healing, greater bone density, healthier and happier internal dialogues, and greater creativity and relationships with other people.
The key to my message is not about notoriety or getting on TV (since all TV, broadcast and cable, now block people like me from airing our views that are against the interests of Big Pharma that pays billions of dollars to air their awful direct-to-consumer drug ads). It is about telling you the raw truth, but a truth that restores health, even if your doctor doesn’t get it and it causes yelling and screaming in board meetings at Merck, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson who recognize that powerful insights into the microbiome are going to expose the inadequacies of the pharmaceutical model.
