You’ve likely noticed that the world of probiotics has become very crowded. Manufacturers and retailers, eager for sales of their products have, unfortunately, resorted to using gimmicks to boost sales.
First, let’s be clear: the current crop of commercially available probiotics are mostly haphazard collections of microbes, species combined without rhyme or reason. Add this microbe, toss in another, then another, all because there may have been some favorable evidence reported on individual species. Many manufacturers do not even specify bacterial strain, a major oversight and means you simply cannot know whether the strain included does anything beneficial at all. Recall my favorite example for illustrating the importance of bacterial strain: E. coli. You have E. coli as a member of your gastrointestinal, GI, microbiome, as do your partner, children, neighbors, co-workers, etc. But eat lettuce contaminated by E. coli from cow manure and you can die of E. coli—same species, different strain. Strain can therefore occasionally even mean a life-death difference. You must identify strain to know whether a microbe provides benefit or not.
In order to stand out from the pack, some probiotic manufacturers/retailers have therefore resorted to making misleading or inaccurate statements that put their product in a more favorable light. Among the gimmicks some have been using:
- Making the claim that most probiotic species do not survive the harsh acidity of the stomach or bile—Yes, there are microbial species reduced in numbers or killed by passing through these harsh environments, but the majority of microbes in probiotics are chosen because of their ability to survive through high acidity. Lactobacillus reuteri, for instance, is extremely acid-tolerant, easily surviving a pH of 1-2 in the stomach for up to several hours. Lactobacillus plantarum easily survives an acidic environment and, for this reason, is a dominant species in acid-rich fermented foods, as well as surviving stomach acid and bile. For this reason, the majority of probiotic species can be recovered in stool, since they survive their trek through the GI tract. Claiming that probiotic species do not survive stomach acid and bile is simply not true.
- Survivability through an acidic environment has caused companies with spore-forming species to claim superiority. This is complete fiction. Even if increased survivability were true, there are meager data that allow a claim of superiority in health effects for spore-forming microbes. That said, there is indeed some evidence that two spore-formers, Bacillus coagulans GBI-30,6096 and Bacillus subtilis subspecies natto confer some interesting benefits. But it ends there. I’ve even been witnessing occasional harmful effects from supplementation with spore-forming microbes outside of these two species. Key to a healthy microbiome is variety, not focusing on a poorly-proven collection of spore-forming microbes.
- Delayed release or double-encapsulation—Some companies have introduced gimmicks that purport to delay release into the colon. This is an absurd notion, as the real center of the universe of microbial problems in many people is not the colon, but the small intestine. If you’ve got trillions of Proteobacteria species such as E. coli, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas (i.e., mostly stool species), for instance, occupying the ileum and jejunum where they don’t belong, breaching the more fragile single-layer mucus barrier (unlike the thicker two-layer mucus barrier of the colon where the bulk of microbes are meant to be), you want probiotic species to be released into the small intestine to outcompete the invaders. Causing release into the colon is like sending troops to Latvia to fight the Russians invading Ukraine—that’s not where the battle is occurring.
Yes: abracadabra and you now have a super probiotic—it’s just not true. Even the most ineffective probiotic can still exert favorable effects such as competing with pathogens, producing beneficial metabolites that help heal the intestinal wall, and increasing intestinal mucus production. But don’t fall for the gimmicks that manufacturers and retailers are increasingly resorting to, as they are marketing ploys, nothing more. In the meantime, the only probiotics that I am aware of that actually incorporate scientific wisdom into their creation are Synbiotic 365 and Sugar Shift (neither of which I have a relationship with). Synbiotic 365 includes important keystones species (even though they made the mistake of including the 30242 strain of L. reuteri that does not produce a bacteriocin and is therefore useless for pushing back SIBO) and Sugar Shift is the creation of my friend, Dr. Raul Cano, who documented the “collaborative” effects of this formulation for reducing blood sugar maximally. As manufacturers/retailers incorporate the emerging science, probiotics will become more effective over time and will be able to make claims based on real evidence, not on gimmicks.
I am looking to buy starter probiotic to make SIBO yogurt. Looking at Wal-Mart, I find Schiff Digestive Advantage (Digestive and Immune Support). It does not explicitly state the B.Coagulans strain, but does say it contains BC30 probiotic. Am I looking at the correct formulation recommended in SuperGut, B.coagulans GBI-30,6086?

I’ve made close to a dozen batches of “yogurt” using Sugar Shift from BiotiQuest. I make it with 1 qt. organic half and half and 2 TBS inulin at 102° F. fermenting for around 48 hours. Works every time. Using sous vide.

Yes … but
Although I have not tried it, several people have, and two issues remain unsettled:
1. ideal temp
seems to be somewhere between room temp and human body temp, in contrast to most program progurts, which tend to be body temp or higher
2. species drift
is unknown, so if brewing for some extra BG benefit, whether that benefit is amplified, or preserved across generations, is an open question.
In any case, there is no program recipe for it.
